Orthodox Christians in Omaha, Nebraska have developed a multi-faceted ministry for people with developmental disabilities: Sheltering Tree. For one, they are in the process of developing apartments for individuals. One has been completed. The second will be soon. There will be live-in caregivers. Secondly, they help these persons develop vocational skills and placement in a job, or in a business of their own. They also have a day program, day trips in the community, and respite care for children and adults. Thirdly, the ministry has volunteers who take groups out for a variety of stimulating and enriching activities in the Omaha metropolitan area. They have their own activity center; there are also various training opportunities, recreational as well as vocational, some of which are provided at discount rates at The Salvation ARmy KROC Center.
