Orthodox Christian DVD on autism and worship

The folks at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Euless, Texas have produced a DVD entitled Angels and Autism: Finding Faith for the Autistic Child  with the aim of “helping worshippers understand challenges faced by parents with autistic kids.” Here is an article, posted in Media Dis&Dat and originally published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, which gives some background on the making of the DVD: Texas women’s group creates DVD about autism, worship

My wife and I ordered the DVD and watched it. It is informative concerning the autism spectrum, the challenges families and individuals with autism face in regard to participation in worship services, and also touches upon the unique opportunity Orthodox Christian worship offers to persons with autism. Professionals, couples, and the Priest of the Parish, who has a special needs child of his own, speak on the video. It was about 15 minutes, give or take. It was nicely done.

To buy the DVD, here is anorder form ready to print: http://stjohndfw.info/Files/atismdvdorderform.pdf

While I think this is wonderful, what is EVEN MORE needed is advocacy for the MANY MANY adults with autism in the Orthodox Church. Children with autism grow up to be adults with autism, it does not somehow magically vanish at age 18. As an Orthodox autistic at age 53 I have had some HORRIBLE experiences in parishes across the United States, some real mistreatment. I hope and pray that this changes.
