Modern Psychologists have learned and are applying insights about how to deal with thoughts and their effect on our lives through directed efforts by their patients in regard to changing their thought patterns.
But this is an old story. The Holy Spirit has guided the Holy Fathers of the Orthodox Church, especially the Desert Fathers and Monastic Elders, in this holy art ever since the early centuries of the Christian era.
Fr. Alexis Trader has written a book relating modern cognitive therapy with the wisdom of the Holy Fathers, entitled
Ancient Christian Wisdom and Aaron Beck’s Cognitive Therapy: A Meeting of Minds (American University Studies VII: Theology and Religion)
He also publishes a blog which explores the issues involved: AncientChristianWisdom.wordpress.com Here is one post from that blog:
This blog is full of many specific issues relating to the control of our thoughts. (As St. Paul writes in 2 Corinthians 10:5, “bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ”) Most likely there is one related to issues you, the reader, are facing.
And here are some online resources on the book:
